How to Prepare for Your First Driving Lesson

Your first driving lesson is a big milestone. It is completely normal to feel a few nerves before getting behind the wheel for the first time.

The good news is that you do not need to overthink it. A little preparation goes a long way. Here are some simple, practical tips to help you feel calm, confident and ready for your first driving lesson in the UK.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep

Driving requires concentration. You will be thinking about steering, pedals, mirrors, road signs and other traffic all at the same time.

Try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep before your lesson so you feel alert and ready to learn. Being well rested makes it much easier to focus and absorb new information.

It is also a good idea to eat something beforehand. Turning up hungry can make it harder to concentrate.

Avoid alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours before your lesson. Even small amounts can stay in your system longer than you expect. You need to be fully within the legal limit before getting behind the wheel.

Wear Comfortable Clothing & Shoes

You will usually be in the car for one to two hours during your first lesson, so wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely.

Footwear is especially important. Avoid flip flops, sandals or high heels. Choose flat shoes such as trainers with thin soles. This helps you feel the pedals properly and gives you better control.

Many learners choose to wear the same pair of shoes for every lesson and their driving test. This helps you get used to how the clutch and brake feel under your foot.

Bring Your Provisional Driving Licence

In the UK, you must:

  • Be at least 17 years old (or 16 if you receive certain government mobility benefits. You can check out the UK government who can drive website to check if you’re eligible)
  • Hold a valid provisional driving licence

Your instructor will need to check your licence before your first lesson, so make sure you bring it with you.

Without it, you cannot legally drive on the road.

What to Expect on Your First Driving Lesson

A lot of first lesson nerves come from not knowing what will happen. On your first driving lesson, you will:

  • Be introduced to the car controls
  • Learn how to move off and stop safely
  • Practise basic clutch control
  • Begin steering and positioning on quiet roads

You will not be thrown into heavy traffic straight away. Lessons start in quieter areas so you can build confidence step by step.

The car will have dual controls, which means your instructor can take control if needed. You are never left on your own.

Relax and Enjoy It

There is nothing complicated you need to do before your first lesson. Just turn up ready to learn.

If you feel anxious beforehand, take a few slow, deep breaths. You are about to learn a completely new skill. Feeling nervous simply means it matters to you.

At Grant’s School of Motoring, we take lessons at your pace. There is no rushing and no pressure. The aim is to help you feel comfortable, supported and in control from day one.

Before you know it, that first nervous lesson will turn into growing confidence and real independence.
